SRINAGAR — The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) on Monday said that its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has completed 20 months of house detention, and demanded his release.
In a statement, the amalgam said that they have been repeatedly demanding the release of Mirwaiz who is “arbitrarily detained” at his home with his “basic human and civil rights and liberties being suspended by the state”.
As the month of Ramadan draws near, APHC asked the authorities to release Mirwaiz and all other political prisoners who, according to them, are arbitrarily detained in various jails and detention centres across J&K and in various states of India.
“As is the centuries-old tradition, the chairman being the Mirwaiz of J&K has religious obligations to be fulfilled, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. So until he is released from home detention, he cannot carry them out,” the statement said.
APHC urged the authorities to release Mirwaiz and all other prisoners without delay and allow the people of Kashmir to observe the holy month of Ramadan with their loved ones and without creating what they call obstacles and hurting the sentiments of Muslims. (KDC)
