Mercury rises in Kashmir Valley, pleasant weather expected for next few days: MeT

Srinagar: The minimum temperatures remained below sub-zero level across Kashmir Valley even as the mercury rose in most parts, weatherman said on Monday.

Quoting an official from meteorological department, GNS reported that mercury increased by a degree Celsius in Srinagar, settling at minus 2.0°C against the previous night’s 3.6°C.

Srinagar has recorded minus 0.4°C normal for this time of the year and for the last three days barring earlier night, the minimum temperature stayed above sub-zero level. Otherwise, the mercury has consistently remained far below normal this winter. On January 31, the mercury plunged to minus 8.8°C, the coldest January night recorded in Srinagar after 30 years.

The minimum temperature also rose in the other parts of Valley, the MeT official added.

Qazigund, the gateway town of J&K, recorded a low of minus 5.5°C against minus 6.3°C on the previous night while the mercury settled at minus 6.2°C in the world-famous tourist resort of Pahalgam same as on the previous night. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.0°C against minus 5.4°C on the previous night.

In Kupwara, mercury settled at minus 2.0°C against minus 3.7°C on the previous night while Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort, recorded a low of minus 2.5°C against minus 11.0°C earlier night.

The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather over the plains of J&K in the next few days.

“Very light rain/snow at one or two places on higher reaches of J&K, mainly dry weather on the plains of J&K,” the weatherman said. (GNS)
