5 injured as PAGD and independent candidates’ supporters fight in Poonch

Poonch: At least five persons were injured in a clash between supporters of two contesting candidates at a polling station in Salwah in Mendhar-C constituency of Poonch district during the last phase of maiden District Development Council (DDC) elections on Saturday, GNS reported.

Official sources told the news agency that there was a clash between supporters of an independent candidate, Mohd Ashfaq, and a People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) candidate, Zeeshan Rana of National Conference (NC) at the polling station.

While polling continued despite the clash, the injured were shifted to Sub District Hospital Mendhar for first aid. Four of them have been identified as Mohd Khaliq (56), Niaz Ahmed, Iftikhar Ahmed (Provisional NC Student Union President) and Naseem Akhter — all residents of Salwah.

SDPO Mendhar, Z A Jafri, confirmed the incident to GNS. He, however, said that polling was going unabated in the area. (GNS)
