The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Friday joined the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), PTI reported.
Two leaders from the party participated in a meeting of the alliance at PDP president and PAGD vice-chairman Mehbooba Mufti’s Gupkar residence.
“We stand by the alliance,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Monga told reporters outside Mufti’s residence.
Asked whether there were any differences between the alliance partners, Monga said, “There is no disagreement and a healthy discussion took place.”
NC provincial president for Kashmir, Nasir Aslam Wani, said the Congress has assured it will be part of the alliance and the seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming maiden District Development Council (DDC) elections.
“The Congress has joined the alliance. Their leader has spoken to (Farooq) Abdullah. Two senior leaders joined the meeting also. They have assured that they will be part of the alliance and part of the DDC elections (seat-sharing arrangement) also,” Wani said, adding that the alliance “will try to complete the seat-sharing list today only”.
“We discussed the DDC elections and are finalising the candidates. The meeting will reconvene at ‘Nawa-i-Subah’. This is not only about (seat) sharing or numbers but a question of giving a message,” NC leader and Member of Parliament from south Kashmir’s Anantnag, Justice (retd) Hasnain Masoodi said.
Earlier on Thursday, leaders from PAGD and Congress met in Jammu to deliberate on various issues about the DDC elections.
The PAGD on Thursday released the list of joint candidates approved by the alliance to contest the first phase of the polls.
The alliance, according to the list, has fielded 27 candidates from three parties — 21 from National Conference, 4 from Peoples Democratic Party and 2 from Peoples Conference.
Pertinently, the first-ever elections for the DDCs will be held from November 28, in 8 phases, and will conclude on December 22.
The elections for the vacant seats of Sarpanchs and Panchs and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) will also be held simultaneously with the DDC Polls.
