Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement has demanded that government officials must stop harassment of transparency activists especially those using Right to Information Act to seek information from public authorities.
In a statement, Chairman RTI Movement Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat said that the FIR filed against Sajad Hussain, a Chadoora based activist is highly condemnable. He demanded that a high-level probe be ordered against Municipal Committee Chadoora where funds meant for civic amenities have been mismanaged for the last many years.
“In the past also, RTI activists were booked under fake charges in Budgam for demanding transparency and accountability. Instead of taking action against the corrupt officials, especially those involved in bungling of public funds, authorities are targeting public-spirited citizens,” the statement said.
“If this continues, nobody would raise voice against corruption and there will be chaos all around J&K. We condemn this incident and appeal Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, CIC Bimal Julka, Chief Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam and DGP Dilbag Singh to intervene,” the statement added.
The statement also hailed former Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah, noted activist and Magsaysay awardee Aruna Roy and former Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi for condemning the harassment of Sajad Hussain.
